Last Art Post of 2017...with Art!

Princess Leia and Chewbacca

After I finished Cry Havoc and Survivors Club (June 2016) I fell down a bit of sad hole. I thought I was just having a sad day, but then it lasted a year. And then the next year. Each passing year, there's less job offers, less emails, less Likes. No one ever says it, but success in comics is a lot about people being invested in your success. When people are invested in your success, it's a lot of fun. When they're not, it's hard. Nobody does it by themselves. If you're an artist, find an artist friend and help each other out. But be genuine. Stop trying to get ahead all the time. Be good to people...and not to get something, but just to be nice.

Next May will be my 20th Anniversary as a professional artist (and working in comics). Wow! I'm incredibly grateful to have been a pro artist for 20 years. I'm learning to be happy and grateful. I can draw and paint--which I love to do--and I have 3 healthy kids. I'm lucky. I'm learning to feel good about myself. My main struggle these past couple years has been to feel appreciated. And that's still a work in progress.

I need to be a better artist this year. That's all there is to it. That's the best medicine...Doing good work.

I hope to celebrate 20 years by doing something special (Funrama-related). I've long hoped it would be a Kickstarter, but I don't want to do a Kickstarter unless the work is 99% "In-The-Can"  (because that's the way I am.) So, maybe I'll do a Patreon. But, I'll need to hire a Patreon advisor. Someone to help me do it well.

Here are some recent color commissions. Thanks for commissioning work from me. It keeps me artistically fit. I don't run my commission business like other artists. I'm sorry, but also not sorry. It could take 2 months, 6 months, 12 months...I don't care. It's done when it's done. Commissioning a drawing from me is a gamble, but you're not betting anything. You're just making a request. You pay when it's done. You're expected to pay when it's done. I've recently had one guy bail on me and not pay. If you can't wait, don't commission me. If you're good with waiting, go ahead and make a request: funrama@gmail.com

Thanks for supporting Saucer State this year. I think it's a very special book and one of my favs.

Also, please hire me if you need a cover! I would love to get more cover jobs.

Okay! I hope you all have a happy, healthy New Year. Let's do it!!

Black and White (and Gray) commissions

Death
Drawing commissions in gray is fun and relaxing while doing color commissions are hard. So if you feel like commissioning a drawing in gray...go for it! But if you want color, that's fine, I don't mind.

Anyway, To all who have commissioned from me: Thank you. I know the wait is long, but I'm trying to work through them before I start a new book project. I appreciate those that have patiently waited.
You've been nice. I eventually get to everyone.

As for those few people who can't wait and slagged me off on Facebook for taking too long on commissions: I'm still fuming over that. Your expectations about when your drawing should be done don't interest me. You can take those expectations and walk right out the door and dump them on some other artist. I don't charge up front, therefore I don't owe you anything but a drawing that will be done when it's done.

Let's Talk About Commissions

Cyclops and Jean Grey

Here's some recent commissions, color and gray.
Now, to the good stuff:

I don't take money upfront. I hate taking money upfront. It causes problems and that's why I never do it. And, yet...there's problems.

I don't take money upfront, so, that means:

1. You're not my boss
2. I don't work for you. I'm doing you a favor.
3. You're not my employer.
4. I don't need to answer emails asking when the commission is done. I'm not paid to do that. And, also, read number 1 again.
5. If you're upset that the commission is not done yet, that is your thing you need to deal with.
6. I finish the commission when I finish the commission.

Hey: I love being an artist. I'm grateful and lucky and humble that I get to do this. The fact that I can draw for people means a LOT to me. I love to do it and I want to do it. Please commission me. But if someone gives me a hard time, then I don't need to do it. If you don't mind waiting, please commission me. If you dislike waiting, hire another artist.

Price list:
9X12 inch paper, gray: $70
9X12 inch paper, color: $80
shipping extra: $7 USA; $12 Canada;  $16 International

12X18 inch paper, gray: $120
12X18 inch paper, color: $140
shipping extra: $8 USA; $13 Canada;  $18 International

Price is for one character. Extra character is $20 extra small / $40 extra for large.
Special background art requests are $20 extra small / $40 extra for large.
I also have 11X14 inch paper or 11X17 inch paper if you prefer.

Sketches...Heroic Heroines!

Big Barda
Here are some recent sketches.

Also: Thank you so much for commissioning me.

But...If you commission a sketch from me, don't send emails asking me when is it done and where is it and can I have it now and have you shipped it and can you send me a sketch and and and.

I'm at that age where I can't deal with that anymore. There's a reason I don't take money up front. I feel it buys me the freedom to be an artist and take the necessary time and deal with life. If you want to hire an artist to send status reports, you should get someone else. With me, you just put in a request, sit back in your sack, play a little Xbox, and I'll call you in a few months when it's done. The magic of ART!

Some More Commissions

Storm
Here are some current commissions. All completed with inks and watercolors and acrylics.
Annnnnnd here are base prices....

9X12 inch paper, gray: $70
9X12 inch paper, color: $80
shipping extra: $7 USA; $11 Canada;  $15 International

12X18 inch paper, gray: $120
12X18 inch paper, color: $140
shipping extra: $8 USA; $12 Canada;  $17 International

Price is for one character. Extra character is $20 extra small / $40 extra for large.
Special background art requests are $20 extra small / $40 extra for large.
I also have 11X14 inch paper or 11X17 inch paper if you prefer.

I only like to draw mainstream pop culture characters. Comics preferably; but TV, movie and video games are okay. I shy away from people's smaller creator-owned properties. I don't like to draw real-life likenesses unless you'll pay more (I'm not that good at it). I won't do your original character unless you pay me a massive, filthy amount. I don't do commissions of people's fiances, family members or pets. Sorry.
If you're the type of person that needs your drawing right away, please close your browser window and leave quickly as fast as you can. There's a reason why I don't take money up front.
One more note: I think people see these drawings with tons of stuff and think,"me too". I would advise against asking for tons of stuff unless you really want it.  Asking for tons of stuff can make the commission take longer. And, these drawings are better when they're allowed to breath. But, if you really want multiple characters and unique backgrounds, I'm willing to accommodate. I just want everyone to be happy.
